Times Reporter : Energy leaders defend fracking

Times Reporter -- Hydraulic fracturing has been used about 80,000 times to drill wells in Ohio during the past 60 years, and there have been no instances of water contamination as a result, says the head of an oil-and-gas education program.

“Well construction has been the issue, not hydraulic fracturing,” said Rhonda L. Reda, executive director of the Ohio Oil and Gas Energy Education Program.

Reda was among speakers featured Tuesday at a summit sponsored by the Tuscarawas Oil and Gas Alliance at the Performing Arts Center at Kent State Tuscarawas.

The hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, process was first used in Ohio for a well drilled near East Sparta in 1952, according to Robert Chase, chairman of the Department of Petroleum Engineering and Geology at Marietta College.

The bull feces deepens from the aviator: "Oh, and since there's been fracking since 1952, why didn't the oil and gas drillers frack the shale back then? Did they not use back then these wonderful proprietary fracking fluids which make the process much more cost effective now?

If they want to frack, they can do it with just water and sand. Leave the witches brew in the cauldron."

Wrong again, but we've come to expect that from those that choose ignorance over learning the facts. study up and get back to us......

More BS from aviator rob: "Also, why exactly do the oil and gas drillers refuse to provide a list of which chemicals are in fracking fluid? Is it because those same chemicals seems to show up in the groundwater? Of course the lawyers will say, "That didn't come from us!" Really?! Well, where did it magically appear from?"

Show us a PROVEN case? My post below was directed at just this kind of fear mongering tactic used by those of your ilk.

@ aviator rob who opines "Have you ever seen an oil and gas driller without a small entourage of lawyers, drpepperTX? With enough marketing, public relations, and lawyers, they can convince anyone that the sky is green and it's good for you!"
=======================================
What a load of crap! Have you ever seen the army of lawyers for Sierra Club, Green Peace and the EPA? How about hospitals, drug companies, heck any industry for that matter? You're arguments are weak and based in factless emotion and have done nothing but aid and abet today's litiguous society.

Energy leaders defend fracking and their profits! When fracking operations have moved on to other areas and surface and ground waters are polluted, then what?
We Didn't Do It! It must have been somebody else!
Fracking sand and water contains pollutants released from the underground rock and brought to the surface: Lead, Methane, various gasses and chemicals and whatever else contained in the underground rock and sand deposits. The fracking water is not treated but released as is. Protect the surface and ground waters, people and animals at all times from fracking! And, Ohio has problems with increased earthquake activity when fracking water is injected in the ground.
Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe and reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using other forms of less expensive transportation to lower your cost, if possible.
The price of fuel at the pump is too high!

If the practice was still covered by the Clean Water Act, I wouldn't be that concerned. Unfortunately, it tends to be a huge polluter of ground water, as well as causing peoples wells to catch on fire...

And here we have aviator rob continuing with the propagation of baseless fear and paranoia.

Funny the choice of words, defend? It's been proven safe but just like in the days of the Salem witch hunts the industry is guilty until proven innocent.

You see, there is a huge amount of deceiving information spouted out to the public about hydraulic fracturing, a decades-old technology. Those who spread this misinformation are mostly preying on the public's fears, with an ultimate goal of forcing state governments to succumb to that fear and prevent or even ban hydraulic fracturing. We need to make sure that the discussion is productive, and that any rules are legitimately conceived. Fact must be separated from fiction.

The most common claim talking point is that hydraulic fracturing contaminates ground water. This is baseless. Have you ever noticed that the critics who make that claim never provide concrete evidence? The reason for their omission? It is obvious why. After being used more than 1.2 million times there have been no confirmed cases of hydraulic fracturing contaminating water. None. Never. Ever.

As EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson said in April of 2012, "In no case have we made a definitive determination that the fracking process has caused chemicals to enter groundwater."

The three "smoking gun" cases that the anti-shale zealots were sinking their teeth into have proven false or based on very poor science. See Pavillion WY, Dimoch, PA, and Parker County, TX.

Oh and the "evil Halliburton Loophole" talking point! LOL, what a joke. This is the errant claim born out of the yellow journalism of "gasland", a proven fraudulent film by Josh Fox, that hydraulic fracturing is "exempt" from the Safe Drinking Water Act, thanks to an energy bill passed by Congress in 2005. The truth??? SDWA has been the law of the land for nearly 40 years, and at no point has it ever covered hydraulic fracturing. Why??? States already tightly and effectively regulate the process.

How can an industry be exempt from something that never covered you in the first place? But you hear this falsehood talking point most every time the subject comes up.

It is important to rely on facts and science, not fear-mongering talking points.

Number43, people who want fracking should be forced to have a well on their land. You want the rewards? Then YOU assume the risks.

How many cents per gallon is cancer worth to you, MrLuigi?

People seem to be ready to roll the dice on riskier and riskier schemes to save less and less money.

Isn't it great how business can prey on the American sense of optimism?

Don't worry. Things will PROBABLY turn out okay. And if they don't, "Oh well, them's the breaks!"

Kwit yer yappin', PettyEddie2012?

How about you post your address. That way we can pass it on to the oil and gas industry. You'll be getting a knock on your door in a few weeks by someone asking to drill on your property.

I'm sure everything will be fine. Nothing to worry about. You trust them, right?

Not so sure when it's YOUR backyard, huh?

Sure hope it is safe since the drillers are going at it full bore. There should be no need to inject toxic chemicals into the ground just to fracture shale. The process would be more likely to be benign if the toxics were eliminated.

Gotta love how people have fun with numbers. Only 0.49% of fracking fluid is something other than water or sand. That's great but that still equals 25,000 to 35,000 gallons of toxic additives being injected under pressure into the ground. How strong are those well casings, again?

That fact remains that these toxic chemicals keep showing up in people's water supplies. The oil and gas industry is content to say, "It wasn't us!"

Really? So who else is using fracking fluid?
